Sonidos y Letras is Our First Big Accomplishment
Our first CD is called Sounds and Letters, Sonidos y Letras in Spanish. It was developed using the Classroom Suite software provided by Cambium Learning. In an effort led by Alicia Contreras, a disability leader from Mexico, we created a joyful, rich program with music, graphics, and hours of engagement. It promotes early Spanish reading skills with:
- 25 activities
- An animated song for the five vowels
- Careful instruction in phonemic awareness
- Sentence writing where words come alive
- Fun and interactive stories
- Recorded speech, entirely in Spanish

These are the ten letters included in this CD. Users navigate from this page to various engaging activities where they learn the letter names, letter sounds and how each letter is written. The design of each activity was reviewed and approved by literacy experts in the US, Argentina, Chile and Mexico.
"El Cajón de las Vocales" is a song written by Speech Therapists and educators to help children learn the sound of the vowels. With this activity, users learn the letters and the sounds of all the vowels, supported by fun graphics and a great rhythm.
The "Oraciones" activities accompany each of the letters taught in the CD "Sonidos y Letras: AEIOU-LMSPT" and allows children to practice building simple or complex sentences, even before they learn how to read or write!
"El Sapo Salta" is a short read-aloud story. The key words of the story use only the ten letters included in the curriculum of this CD. At the end of the story, the users are transferred automatically to a "Count the Words in the Sentence" activity, which helps the users to concentrate and hear every word in the sentence.
The "Beginning Sounds" activities help students develop their phonemic
awareness as they listen to words and identify which ones begin with the
target sound. All of the activities include recorded speech by professional
Spanish-speaking voice talent. Students are rewarded with animation and
stars.
Alicia Contreras was the lead developer for Sonidos y Letras. She coordinated the input from Dr. Doris Baker, Dr. Claudia Marimon, and others. She designed the CD concept and created each activity. We are deeply grateful for her work.
